Lynne White, Regional Sales Manager Western Canada, Velas Resorts hosted a small and intimate gathering of a select group of top producing travel agents in Calgary along with WestJet Vacations group personnel at The Cookbook Company where we enjoyed a culinary cooking experience with an Italian-themed dinner. We were privileged to have the honour of special guest, Mr Juan Velas, owner of Velas Resorts in our company to share his personal story and history of the brand and the properties.

Mr Vela and his brother were originally in the construction business, building condo units in Puerto Vallarta with no intention of entering the hotel business. But when the recession hit in the early 1990’s, Mr Vela and his brother had to think outside of the box to fill the unsold units. They began by heading to Canada and the United States, taking on a very hands-on approach to marketing by knocking on doors and working with travel partners to create a new vacation experience – a luxury all-inclusive vacation in Mexico. Their hard work, dedication and courage to creatively market their properties have elevated the properties to be the top of their class with the highest number of AAA Diamond awards outside of the US.

Gourmet and specialty cuisine is at the forefront of the all-inclusive experience at Velas Resorts and their restaurants are headed by Michelin-star chefs. It is no surprise they bring the same level of culinary experience to us to keep it top of mind for our clients. We began our cooking class experience began with a toast of Velas-branded mezcal (which all guests receive when they stay at the Grand Velas properties) to the company of our new friends, among great food, wine and a fun cooking experience ahead!
