Stay in a Boutique Hotel
Boutique hotels will always have ten times more culture than a chain hotel will! As such, you’ll want to check into one the next time you book a vacation. They’ll be run by locals, staffed by locals, and serve plenty of local food and music. What could be better for getting an introduction to a new culture?
You should also try to avoid checking into hostels. If you want to get to know a country, and you’ve got a bit of budget behind you, always go for a small hotel. Hostels are safe and budget-friendly, but they’re also usually quite removed from the action. It’s hard to get to know a country when you’re five miles out from the city and have to walk the whole way!
Hire a Car
Having your own reliable transport will make traversing a country ten times easier! So if you have room in the budget, be sure to hire your own car to get from A to B. Be sure to double-check the terms and conditions of hiring a rental, inquire after the insurance involved, and keep an eye on the roads as well. Go on Plenty of Tours
Tours are the bread and butter of getting to know another country. Sometimes you have to go off the main path a little to find the good ones, but make sure you fit around two or three guided tours into your next vacation.
Tour guides will usually be sign posted if you want to go on one spontaneously, but you can also book them online. Similarly, always grab an audio guide when you’re heading around museums or galleries – get to know the attractions at their level!
